What is your current job title and work location?
I am the Director at the Center for Human Nutrition of the Cleveland Clinic Health System.
How did you get involved in the field of clinical nutrition?
When I started college I did not know what I wanted to study, but had signed up for a general nutrition class and ended up liking it. At that time I did not even know what a dietitian was, but as I investigated the course work it seemed to fit for me. It involved a mixture of science including biology, chemistry and physiology, along with nutrition classes.
What specifically do you do in your current position?
As the Director, I oversee the operations, finances and clinical practice of the registered dietitians, dietetic technicians, nutrition support nurses and clerical support personnel.
Why did you become involved in A.S.P.E.N. and what are the benefits of being involved?
I became involved with A.S.P.E.N. during my early clinical practice years as a nutrition support dietitian. I was fortunate to get involved through volunteering and have always found the organization to be very helpful, providing excellent resources and opportunities to grow professionally. I appreciate the opportunities I had to work on a number of committees and in a multidisciplinary environment. I appreciate the integrity of the organization and how it always keeps it members in mind as well as how they can positively affect patient care. One of the things I value most are the friends and colleagues that I have developed through working with A.S.P.E.N. over the past many years-irreplaceable!
What recommendations would you give to a dietitian just starting her/his career?
Follow your passion for what you want to do. It may change, and that is OK. That is how you grow. Get involved with professional organizations to support life-long learning and seek opportunities. Lastly, be open-minded, supportive and diplomatic in your interactions with others.
